A square plate vibrates in a pure mode, and sand scattered across it does what real sand does: it gets thrown around where the plate moves and comes to rest along the nodal lines — the curves where the plate doesn't move at all. Every figure you see is the shape of stillness in one tone. Drag to play a different mode: the old figure shatters and the sand walks itself into the new one. Left alone, the plate tours its repertoire.
